CPSTS relies on private support to fund and maintain its education programs. The Coalition for Public Safety Training in Schools, Inc. (CPSTS) a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 2013, has as its mission, “to educate, advocate and foster development of Public Safety training in Prince George’s County schools, providing a pathway to service benefiting youth and the community.”
Supported by county and private funding, its all-volunteer Board of Directors strives to enhance the lives of 15–18-year-old youth from underserved communities. CPSTS finances local high schools that participate in the Fire Science Cadet Program, which can lead to jobs as County Firefighters or EMTs. The organization’s three core programs include: Public Safety Educational/Informational Tours, offering an inside look at a 9-11 Call Center; the Driver’s Education Scholarship Program, helping students earn their driver’s license—a requirement for employment in public safety; and the Life, Leadership, and Life Skills Program, which provides mentoring, interview preparation, resume writing, time management, and effective communication skills.
